it’s hard to untangle self worth, societal status and parental whispering - as a korean american i fought to keep my degree to theatre & performance studies and english lit at stanford.
as soon as i graduated i caved and went into consulting and although the salary does remove any anxiety around financial stability and i enjoy the intellectual challenge, i can’t remember the last time i felt my soul be fulfilled & happy.
i only daydream about making the jump - every time i go see a great play (i recommend Best of Enemies on the west end). but i congratulate you on going for it. and every day fighting to keep going against self doubt and pressure.
the path you are going on is not only valid but inspiring. you bring joy not only to yourself, but hundreds & thousands of others and that’s reason enough to keep going. if every in doubt, i recommend a poem called Desiderata by Max Erhmann. his words have kept me going through the darkest days.
i’ll keep you in my thoughts during the festive period.
I love that your critique of influencers and PR events still manages to sound diplomatic and eloquently analysed even though we can all probably guess what they can be like. As someone’s that’s been on both sides of them, I still think they’re abject hell.
These newsletters are truly such a joy to read and it’s so much fun seeing you expand your creative realm.
So interesting to hear more about your career change, especially as I studied Comparative Literature as well! It’s encouraging to hear how you were able to make that change. Happy holidays to you, Henry, and Princess Rhubarb!
I really really enjoyed your segment on moving jobs and what it entails to be an influencer. Thanks for your honesty, it is eyeopening how much work (and admin!) is behind short videos/posts.
It’s so interesting to hear the truth on the business of influencing, so many others just talk about how amazing it is but rarely touch on the negatives that might happen.
Hope you have a great holiday season and Rhubarb enjoys unwrapping some gifts! My dog prefers unwrapping gifts to the actual gift, no idea if anyone else’s dog is the same!!
I absolutely loved the Rhubarb stickers you posted so I’m definitely entering, I’m @maddie_kawski on instagram x
I loved reading the complete honesty on your career change and what it entails because obviously we only see the finished content and not the work that goes into it which I found really interesting!
I have a large Christophe Robin product list that I sent to my family for Christmas gift ideas for me, all from your recommendations (complete with the discount code of course) so fingers crossed come next week my hair will be looking fab!
I haven’t seen avatar yet but I feel you on the whales making you emotional!! X
I’m assuming there won’t be a newsletter next week because it’s Christmas Day so I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas 🫶🏻
The segment about having “a good job” = high self-worth really hit home. It’s such a hard thing to work through, when you realise that you are doing something out of pressure and not because you inherently want to do it. Insta: @jkvarnberg
Thank you so much for your honesty and vulnerability Tamsin!! Lots of helpful things to remember about any profession (etiquette and gratitude) in a future post would you be able to share a little more about partnerships where you had freedom to create anything? Thinking of your amazing Penhaligon’s video with Rhubarb! You got me hooked on their fragrances!!!
I love this. It's such genuine read. I've been loving these newsletters as it's such a refreshing read. As someone who's 27 and online more often than not, I do sometimes think that maybe I'm too old to get into the content game.
Especially when you talk about expectations that family have and having to explain what you do. Being a child of immigrants, I know the way they show love is to encourage going for 'good' jobs purely because there's stability they never had.
That said, I've done the creative thing. And it's hard. I appreciate you talking about the reality of it. I'm back in a 'safe' job but it's afforded me a freedom that I have never had before with financial stability.
I would love to return to my creative roots some day but right now I'm hoping to be able to explore them without having to decide which bill to pay or just never taking a break because everything relied on it.
I really wish you the utmost success as a fellow asian woman and it's so encouraging to see others out there succeed.
I really enjoyed reading about openly talking about career changes and what is means to actually have ‘a good job’ - I think it can be hard finding a job that has a balance between enjoyment and one that can actually provide an income :) ig: @vivienneluu1 (I don’t need to win the giveaway but I would really love some Rhubarb stickers)
I have been following along since 2020 and I’m constantly impressed with how creative and engaging your online presence is (and of course I am queen rhubarb’s biggest fan). Thank you for this transparency--it’s the most honest account of influencing I have seen yet.
Thanks for sharing. I read it all through and yes, it completely makes sense if there’s a lot of $ to be made by influencers if they’re doing all the work of a whole creative team. Would love to enter the giveaway as well - my IG is @JessLu
So interesting to hear such an insight into influencing and the reality of how it works. As someone who has always had similar feelings of expectation (often self imposed in fairness) and still works a traditional role, I find it so eye-opening. Anyway, I always look forward to this in my inbox every week. I've only managed to read it this evening after a night away and I was pining to get to it! Already looking forward to next week. Happu holidays! (especially to Rhubarb of course!)

Always look forward to getting this in my inbox every Sunday (this is the first newsletter I’ve ever subscribed to and it is 100% worth).
Thank you for always being so candid with us.
